UPV-CFOS hosts work immersion of SHS students from Pontevedra, Capiz anew

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, UP Visayas (UPV-CFOS) is currently hosting the work immersion of the Grade 12 senior high school (SHS) learners from Pontevedra National High School (PNHS), Province of Capiz.

A total of 67 Grade 12 students from the said school are undergoing the immersion program at the Institute of Fish Processing Technology (IFPT) and Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanology (IMFO) to gain knowledge and exposure to various academic and research activities of the College.

Forty-eight (48) students taking the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) track immerse in IFPT while 19 taking Agri-fishery Arts (AFA) strand have their immersion activity in IMFO.  The students are divided in batches.

The two-week work immersion of the first batch of students, 16 in IFPT and nine (9) in IMFO,kicked-off last March 6, 2023.

Both institutes conducted separate opening programs to welcome the students.  IFPT Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sharon N. Nuñal and IMFO Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sheila Mae Santander-de Leon led in welcoming the students, their advisers, and immersion supervisor.

The immersion in IFPT for three (3) batches will run until April 21, 2023 and until March 31, 2023 for two (2) batches of students in IMFO.

CFOS has prepared lectures, practical-workshops, and hands-on laboratory exercises that are relevant to the track of the Grade 12 learners. The activities are tailored for the students to have a real workplace experience to help them prepare in their future goals, careers, and employment after completing their senior years.

This is the second time that CFOS accommodates students from PNHS for their work immersion. A group of 14 STEM students had their work immersion program with IMFO last January 2020.

Meanwhile, a ceremonial signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the IFPT represented by Director Nuñal, and PNHS represented by its Immersion Supervisor Francis Karl Rendon was conducted during the opening program held at the Umali Hall Conference Room, CFOS, UP Visayas Miagao campus.

Rose T. Mueda, IFPT immersion coordinator, Enrique N. Legaspi III, IFPT administrative officer, and John Michael Martinez, PNHS STEM advisor, witnessed the signing of said agreement.
