UPV MUSEUM OF NATURAL SCIENCES
The UPV Museum of Natural Sciences, formerly the College of Fisheries (CF) Museum was established in 1988 through the initiative of Prof. Prudencia V. Conlu. It originally was intended to be a showcase of fish and other aquatic plants and animals. Many of the specimens were those used for the laboratory classes of fisheries students in UP Diliman and were brought to Iloilo during the transfer. It became the UPV Museum of Natural Sciences with the establishment of the one of UPV’s flagship project which is the Science and Technology (S&T) Park in June, 1994.
At present, the museum serves as a repository of the different fish and aquatic species, medicinal plants, and birds of the Philippines with emphasis on the natural flora and fauna of Western Visayas. It also serves as a showcase of the Philippine’s rich flora and fauna to visiting scientists, students, teachers and researchers.
The museum can be an excellent complement to classroom instruction. The UPV Museum of Natural Sciences displays more than 700 species of identified species of fish, 200 species of shells, 41 species of seaweeds, 25 species of corals, some birds, fishing nets, fishing corals, echinoderms, crustaceans and medicinal plants. This also serves as a venue for other student’s research and source of information. The museum serves as a unit to education research and extension activities.
