INSTITUTE OF FISH PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY
The Institute of Fish Processing Technology (IFPT) is one of the four component institutes of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, the University of the Philippines Visayas located in Miagao, Iloilo, Philippines. It has three (3) fundamental functions in the field of post-harvest fisheries: academic/instruction, research, and public service/extension. The IFPT provides a venue to educate, explore, and extend the knowledge and expertise in fish processing technology integral to a holistic approach to fisheries.
As an academic institution, its curricular offerings are aimed at equipping students with theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and analytical capabilities that will enable them to address challenges and concerns in the field of post-harvest fisheries. The faculty and researchers of the institute are licensed fishery professionals with expertise in the fields of post-harvest fisheries handling and processing, food quality and safety, fishery product development, fisheries quality management, microbiology, molecular biology, fisheries biochemistry, fishery entrepreneurship, and marketing systems, among other specializations.
The institute has an updated research program that is relevant, innovative, and responsive to the current needs in the field, clustered into the following themes:
- Food safety and quality
- Fish handling and preservation
- Product innovation
- Emerging technologies
- Bioactive compounds and functional food
- Waste utilization and management
IFPT offers public service and extension programs in the form of technology transfer and dissemination, short-term training courses, contracted services for pilot-scale production of commercially viable technologies, analytical services, technological assistance and consultancy, and immersion for Senior High School students.
Also, IFPT has ventured into the production of fishery products utilizing locally available and sustainable resources to fully maximize the use of expertise and facilities, and to promote technology adoption and product commercialization. Its income generation program, Fishtek Fish Processing (formerly FishTEK Ventures), has been in operation beginning of 2017, developing value-added products from milkfish and other fish species like sardines and flying fish, big-belly pomfret, and snake mackerel which are underutilized species found in the region. The institute ventures into these activities to address issues or concerns of the fishery sector, particularly for the common fisherfolks in the coastal areas.
In order for the institute to solidly adhere to its vision and mission, it accedes to the tagline
“The Institute of Fish Processing Technology, your partner in postharvest fisheries”.
